Makubwa House is a Classic Swahili House in the middle of the Old Stone Town of Lamu on the Coast Of Kenya, East Africa.....
The House was built in the 1850's for a Patrician Family and at times in the past, accommodated three to four generations at the same time, spread out over the several floors.
Each floor of the house consists of 4 - 5 Galleries the width of each determined by the length of mahogany poles that support the ceiling above it.
the pool is a small one.
a plunge bath to cool off during the day;
a magical place to spend time with friends in the heat of the day or cool of the evening.

On the left, is the first floor gallery. The deeper you go into the house, the darker it gets. That's why we created a hole in the ceiling to bring in the sun.
Geographically, Lamu is in the Southern Hemisphere, 2 degrees below the Equator and at the Equinox, September and March, the sun is straight above the equator, and of course the sun shines straight down at a 90 degree angle, into the plunge pool.
