DINING ROOM

MAHOGANY AND LIME are everywhere in the dining room.

Mahogany Trees, called Mbambakofi in Swahili, have been grown and used for woodworking for millennia in the Lamu Archipelago until Unesco called a stop to the cutting and exploitation of this magnificent wood by 2010.  The  furniture industry was forced to look for alternative wood sources.  All very handsome, none as magnificent as Mahogany.

"Lime" is burnt limestone.  On the outer islands you can see piles of burnt lime.  Limestone is sedimentary rock and is extracted from quarries and underground mines all over the world.

The abundant carvings in Makubwa House are made of lime.  Once dried and applied to a wall or floor, it is easily manipulated and very durable.

Mahogany and Lime meet everywhere in the Dining Room

The ceiling boxes are made of mbambakofi mahogany and dyed a natural red in a 7- step-back fashion, adding physical and emotional weight to the ceiling.....
